Sewing in Your Zipper
Sewing a zipper has never been easier with the Brother Sew Straight™ Laser Vision Guide! The video below walks you through the entire process, but here are a few quick tips:
Designer Tip: It’s important to prepare the fabric with fusible interfacing. The interfacing stabilizes the seam and prevents the fabric from puckering while sewing in the zipper. Choose a lightweight, soft fusible interfacing. Cut the interfacing a little wider than the seam allowance and at least 1” longer than the zipper. Be sure to test the interfacing on a scrap of fabric first. If the interfacing show through to the right side of the fabric, try trimming the edge of the interfacing with pinking sheers.
Next, I will walk you through marking the zipper placement and then basting, sewing, and pressing the seam as a guide for the zipper.
Learn a quick and easy way to center the zipper with the seamline and quickly secure the zipper with pins (of course you could also use a hand-basting stitch). Then the fun begins! Turn on the Brother Sew Straight™ Laser Vision Guide. Place the sewing machine needle about 3/8” from the seamline and then move the laser light to line up with the seamline. Start stitching, using the laser light to keep you stitches straight! It’s really that easy!
Remove the basting stitches and your zipper is inserted and ready to go! The laser light makes it so simple to topstitch a perfectly straight line. In fact, I have found the laser light really comes in handy when inserting a zipper into shiny or textured fabric. Follow step by step in the video and let me know how your zipper turns out.
